From September 14, NBN Co will launch speed upgrades for NBN 100 plans and above.

These updates promise faster NBN speeds to those on Fast, Superfast and Ultrafast plans, for those on FTTP and HFC connections.

Essentially, NBN 100 plans will be upgraded to maximum download speeds of 500Mbps while NBN 250 plans will increase to 750Mbps. Both NBN 500 and NBN 750 plans will report maximum upload speeds of 50Mbps, while NBN 1000 plans will still be limited to 1,000Mbps, but upload speeds will double to 100Mbps.

Who is eligible for the faster NBN plans?

Faster NBN plans are available for those with FTTP and HFC connections, but those on other connection types may still be in luck. By the end of 2025, around five million Fibre to the Node (FTTN) and FTTC addresses will be able to upgrade to Fibre to the Premises (FTTP) for free.

Instead of upgrading all customers automatically, customers need to request the upgrade from the NBN once the technology is live in a particular area. If you’re already eligible for an upgrade, all you need to do to trigger the upgrade is order an NBN 100 plan or faster. You can check to see if you’re eligible on the NBN website.

When will faster speeds be available?

While the speed upgrades are taking place in mid-September, each provider may not pass on these speed changes to customers immediately. For example, Dodo and iPrimus don’t plan to pass on the speed changes until October 1.

However, a select few providers — SpinTel, Tangerine and Exetel — have already begun selling NBN 500 plans. If you’re interested in upgrading ASAP, check out these plans below:

Will faster plans cost more?

Despite NBN Co having no plans to increase NBN prices for providers, individual providers themselves may increase costs to account for additional costs they’ll likely incur.

At the time of writing, a number of providers have confirmed that eligible customers will get the faster speeds for no extra cost. These include Telstra, Optus, Superloop, Aussie Broadband, Tangerine, More, Vodafone, Dodo, and iPrimus.
