The clever nose of a working police dog has led to an arrest of a man who fled from police after abandoning his car.

Police were driving on Torrens Rd, when they observed a silver Mazda sedan travelling at speed on the opposite side of the road at about 2:30am on Sunday.

Police conducted a U-turn and followed the car, however the Mazda travelled into backstreets at Woodville, in Adelaide’s western suburbs before coming to a dead end on Leslie St East.

The driver dumped the vehicle and took off on foot.

More police were called in and with a police dog and immediately started searching for the man.

The man was found hiding behind a vehicle at a premise on Lyle Court in Woodville.

A 57-year-old from Royal Park was arrested and a check on the man’s licence revealed he was also disqualified from driving.

A search of his vehicle located cannabis, a crystal substance that police allege to be methamphetamine, and cash.

The Royal Park man has been charged with numerous offences including driving disqualified, hinder police, unlawfully on premises and trafficking drugs.

He has been refused bail and will appear in the Port Adelaide Magistrates Court late on Monday.

His vehicle was impounded for 28 days.
