A man has been charged with torturing a seven-week-old baby boy after the child presented to hospital with “extensive injuries” earlier this year.

The unresponsive infant was initially taken to the Queensland Children’s Hospital on March 5.

Medical examinations allegedly revealed the boy had suffered injuries consistent with “prolonged and repeated physical abuse”, Queensland Police said.

As a result, the baby was removed from the care of a 27-year-old man and a 26-year-old woman.

Following a prolonged police investigation, the man from Forest Lake in Brisbane’s southwest was charged with three counts of assault occasioning bodily harm and one count of torture.

Detective Acting Senior Sergeant Joshua Brewer described the incident as “deeply confronting”.

“Detectives worked with care and determination to take appropriate action to remove the child from harm,” he said.

“This investigation highlights the importance of community diligence — if members of the public are aware of or suspect child abuse, they are encouraged to report it to police.”

The man was refused police bail and due to face the Brisbane Magistrates Court on Monday.

The matter has been adjourned until June 23 for a possible bail application.
