Daniil Medvedev announces split with coach Gilles Cervara after grand slam champion’s sad exit from US Open

The former world No.1’s fall from grace continued and now an at-times ‘difficult’ relationship is over.
Daniil Medvedev suffered an emotional-charged exit from the US Open.

Daniil Medvedev has split with long-time coach Gilles Cervara after the one-time grand slam champion’s poor 2025 campaign ended with his meltdown in a first-round loss at the US Open.

Medvedev, the 2021 champion at Flushing Meadows, and Cervara both posted messages on Sunday thanking each other for a successful partnership that included the Russian reaching No.1 in the rankings.

Medvedev shared a series of photos reflecting on their “amazing 8-10 years together”.

“Twenty titles, world No.1 but most importantly a lot of fun moments and memories that will stay with us forever,” he said.

“I am grateful to you for guiding me through all these years and let’s see what life brings us in the future.”

Medvedev has fallen to No.13 in the rankings and lost in the first round of the last three major tournaments, including twice to Benjamin Bonzi.

It was during his loss to Bonzi last week that he had a tirade when the chair umpire allowed Bonzi another first serve after a photographer came onto the court during the match.

Medvedev was fined $US42,500 ($A65,000) for unsportsmanlike conduct and racquet abuse.

In his farewell, Cervara wrote that he loved coaching and supporting Medvedev — “even when it was difficult”.

“Our fantastic eight-season adventure together comes to an end,” the coach wrote.

“Like a symbolic wink of life, it’s after this US Open tournament that we end our collaboration.

“I am grateful and happy for all the great things and wonderful experiences we were able to experience together on the court during these eight years. It will remain etched in my memory forever.

“I thank you for placing your trust in me. I gave EVERYTHING, every second, for our shared goals.

“I loved training you, coaching you, supporting you (even when it was difficult), and finding solutions with you and the team to help you perform.

“I will keep in mind your unconventional magic as a player, which is your strength. It will return, I’m sure.

“I wish you all the success you aspire to as a player in the future.

“And a happy life as a man.

“The road continues, work and performance call to each of us... and I wish us both success.”
