Brisbane midfielder Jarrod Berry not giving up hope despite being declared a ‘long shot’ for grand final

The injured midfielder is willing to ’just strap it up and go for it.’

Jarrod Berry determined to play in grand final

Brisbane star Jarrod Berry is not giving up on playing in next week’s AFL grand final despite being subbed out of the win over Collingwood with a dislocated shoulder.

Berry’s left shoulder popped out for the second time in five weeks when he reached to tackle Collingwood superstar Nick Daicos at the MCG on Saturday night.

The 27-year-old spent several minutes in pain and eventually made his way off the ground, with umpires stopping play as the Magpies were about to launch an attack.

Berry, who was replaced by Bruce Reville, was also subbed out of Brisbane’s win over Fremantle in round 23 with a dislocated shoulder, before returning three weeks later in the qualifying final against Geelong.

But while Berry suffered the same injury against the Dockers, he revealed that he would have played the following week against Hawthorn had it been a grand final.

“It has (happened before) ... they said before the Hawthorn game that if it was a grand final, I’d play so we’ll see what happens,” he told Channel 7 after the win over the Pies.

“Maybe we don’t even scan it and just strap it up and go for it.”

However, coach Chris Fagan wasn’t as optimistic.

“I think Jarrod Berry might be a long shot with the shoulder,” Fagan said of Berry.

The upbeat midfielder also paid tribute to his teammates for getting the result and booking their third-straight grand final appearance.

“Just pumped for the boys, unbelievable feeling. Credit to our club, to be in three grand finals in a row is pretty impressive,” he added.

Lions teammates Josh Dunkley (ankle) and Ty Gallop (ribs) required treatment on injuries in the preliminary final but played out the match.

Two-time Brownlow medallist Lachie Neale is also a huge watch this week as he bids to overcome a calf injury suffered in the qualifying final.

Neale put in a big training session on Saturday and is hoping to prove his fitness for the premiership decider against Geelong.

Collingwood legend Scott Pendlebury also would’ve been in huge doubt for the grand final if his side had advanced.

Pendlebury was an early casualty in the prelim when he injured his left calf and was subbed out after just 10 minutes.

Magpies football boss Charlie Gardiner said Pendlebury experienced “calf tightness” and didn’t respond to treatment.

“It didn’t get better so we decided to sub him out and not take any risks with him,” Gardiner told Seven at half-time.

Pendlebury was seen in a lengthy discussion with club doctors before the match, but Gardiner dismissed suggestions the veteran carried an issue into the contest.

“No, I don’t think so,” Gardiner said.

“No. He was fine going in, he just developed some tightness in his calf 10 minutes in.”
