Police reveal sacked NRL reporter James Hooper’s alleged response after car crash in Leichhardt

The 47-year-old has already issued an apology. Now police have revealed what was said to them after the crash.

After crashing his Ford Ranger into three parked cars at the end of July, sacked NRL reporter James Hooper allegedly told police he was “blind’ immediately after the incident.

Hooper allegedly returned a blood-alcohol level of more than five times the legal limit at 0.253 after the crash, and now Highway Patrol police have revealed what the reporter said to them at the scene in Leichhardt on July 31.

“You got me, you got me. I’m blind,” the 47-year-old allegedly said to the police.

Police have also released an image of Hooper’s car after the crash, which was witnessed by a resident.

“The resident has called triple 0, where police from Leichhardt Highway Patrol located the man a short distance away well affected by intoxicating liquor,” police alleged in a statement.

“He was breath tested, returning a positive result and placed under arrest, stating, ‘You got me, you got me, I’m blind’.”

The image released showed Hooper’s car crashed into the side of a BMW.

The local resident alleged Hooper tried to drive his car out of the wreckage before getting out and walking off.

Fox Sports wasted no time in taking action, with managing director Steve Crawley saying Hooper was leaving the network “effective immediately”.

“James has been a great contributor since he joined us in 2016, but he’s also battled some significant personal issues from time to time,” Crawley said.

“In speaking to him today, James also acknowledges that things need to change for him.”

Hooper was the broadcaster’s chief NRL reporter, wrote columns for its website, and was a sideline reporter for radio station Triple M.

Later on Friday, Hooper quit his role at Triple M.

Hooper told News Corp: “I’ve let the game of rugby league, my employers, my wife and kids down terribly.”

“Hopefully this is the punch between the eyes that will set me straight.”
