Fox Sports chief NRL reporter James Hooper sacked ‘effective immediately’

‘I’ve let the game of rugby league, my employers, my wife and kids down terribly.’

Fox Sports has sacked prominent NRL reporter and presenter James Hooper, reportedly over a drink-driving charge.

A 47-year-old man crashed into three parked cars in Leichhardt on Thursday night, after which the driver — believed to be Hooper — allegedly returned a blood-alcohol level of more than five times the legal limit at 0.253, NSW Police said.

The driver was charged with high-range drink-driving offences and three counts of damaged property.

In a statement provided to News Corp on Friday, Fox Sports managing director Steve Crawley said Hooper was leaving the network, “effective immediately”.

“James has been a great contributor since he joined us in 2016, but he’s also battled some significant personal issues from time to time,” Crawley said.

“In speaking to him today, James also acknowledges that things need to change for him.”

Hooper was the broadcaster’s chief NRL reporter, wrote columns for its website, and was a sideline reporter for radio station Triple M.

Later on Friday, Hooper quit his role at Triple M.

Hooper told News Corp: “I’ve let the game of rugby league, my employers, my wife and kids down terribly.”

“Hopefully this is the punch between the eyes that will set me straight.”
