Will Ashcroft has admitted he took the Suns’ sledging personally this year.
The 22-year-old was targeted in a pre-season clash, with Gold Coast players reportedly taunting him as the wrong Norm Smith medallist from last year’s grand final.
His younger brother Levi also copped plenty of attention from the Suns.
Asked directly if he was “pretty determined” to play well against Gold Coast tonight, Will was clear.
“Always. Probably this side more than others,” he told Channel 7.
“They come after me a little bit and I go right back at them a little bit. There’s been different instances through the past and in the pre-season.
“If I’m being honest I don’t appreciate that, what they were trying to dish up in a pre-season game to Levi and to myself with physicality and words.”
Kane Cornes responded: “So you took that personally?”
Will replied: “Absolutely, I’m not going to cop that on the chin.”
“But at the end of the day it’s a team game and you’ve got to buy into those team principles to get the result,” Will continued.
“There’s no point in me coming out hot-headed and trying to do things, that’s not going to work. Credit to them, that’s part of football. I love that, I’ll embrace that opportunity.”
Will had the perfect response when the Lions first met the Suns during the home-and-away season, tallying 34 disposals and nine clearances in a Brisbane win.
Gold Coast won the reverse fixture but now Will has had the last laugh, notching two goals from 28 touches to eliminate the Suns from the finals.
It’s an interesting rivalry between the Ashcroft boys and Gold Coast, with dad Marcus leading the Suns’ football operations for 10 years before his sons reached the big time as Lions father-son products.
