Hawthorn players ‘gutted’

Hawks skipper James Sicily has spoken to Channel 7 in the deflated Hawthorn rooms after the game.

“Everyone’s pretty gutted, it sort of doesn’t feel real, to be honest,” he said.

“We got off to a dream start, but they were too good in the end.

“We probably just couldn’t get our game going, and got smashed at centre bounce.

“And I feel like they were just a bit tougher than us tonight when the ball hit the ground and that first possession and in the contest.”

Sicily says he’s confident the Hawks can reach this point of the season again, but admits tonight’s loss will sting.

“It’ll be fuel,” he said.

“But we do feel as though we’re on the track and we’re optimistic that we’ll get back to here.”

In Sam Mitchell’s fourth season in charge, the Hawks made finals for the second time under his reign, going one better than last year’s semi-final defeat to Port Adelaide.

CATS INTO THE BIG DANCE

FT - Geelong 17.13 (115) Hawthorn 13.7 (85)

Paddy Dangerfield, take a bow.

What a preliminary final from the Geelong skipper, who has single-handedly sent the Cats into another grand final.

Bailey Smith put the final touch on it with the Cats’ 17th goal, bursting through the forward 50 and slotted a classy goal with four minutes on the clock to blow the lead back out to 30.

But Dangerfield has been the standout.

Just a sublime game from the 35-year-old, who is still playing like he’s 25.

He had 32 touches and kicked three goals, but his game has been more than the sum of his stats.

Dangerfield’s warrior-like efforts have been something to behold.

“Paddy Dangerfield may have just played one of the great finals,” James Brayshaw said on commentary after the final siren.

Alister Nicholson added: “Early on, they needed someone to inspire them.

“He was a wrecking ball tonight. He threw his body into positions many would fear to tread.”

Smith was pretty handy too though, finishing with 36 and 1.1.

The Hawks led by 20 points early in the game after kicking the first three goals, but Geelong dominated the majority of the contest thereafter.

Or maybe it is over...

Stengle soccers one through from close range.

OK this is not over!!

Q4 08.08 - Geelong 15.13 (103) Hawthorn 13.7 (85)

It would take something special for Hawthorn to win, but this game is alive.

Mabior Chol has kicked another one and the Hawks have the past three.

Hold on a sec...

Q4 11.06 - Geelong 15.12 (102) Hawthorn 12.7 (79)

It’s still going to be tough, but the Hawks are threatening to make me look silly.

They’ve kicked two in a row and are back within 23 points.

They couldn’t, could they?

Rain is falling now too.

Huuuuuuuge crowd

No less than 99,597 inside the MCG!

Outside of grand finals, it’s the biggest crowd since 1971.

Alright I think this game is over

Q4 16.41 - Geelong 15.12 (102) Hawthorn 10.7 (67)

The Cats are home.

Gryan Miers has kicked Geelong into another grand final.

Hawthorn are not coming back from 35 points down with 15 minutes left on the clock.

Danger AGAIN

Q4 16.41 - Geelong 14.12 (96) Hawthorn 10.7 (67)

Just as I sent that last post, Danger has gone back again with another goal.

“This is one for the ages,” JB said.

“I’m sure I have seen a better final played, but I can’t remember it.

“It might be one of the great modern finals played, this.”

This man is unstoppable.

Just a quick stat...

Patrick Dangerfield has 19 contested possessions.

Wow.
