‘We’re not ready’

Adelaide skipper Jordan Dawson has told Seven’s post-match coverage that his side was “not ready” for the cauldron that is September yet.

Playing in their finals finals series since 2017, tonight’s loss means the Crows have bombed out in straight sets.

They become the first minor premiers to do that since North Melbourne in 1983.

Dawson says they’ll have a lot of soul-searching to do.

“We got some pretty harsh feedback that we’re not ready for finals yet,” the skipper told Channel 7.

“It’s going to hurt, but we’ll learn from it and improve.”

Asked if he thought the season was a success, Dawson was unsure, but said he was proud of the group.

“I don’t know, it depends how you look at it,” he said.

“Obviously only one team can win the flag, so if that’s what you judge success on, then we haven’t been successful.

“But all I’ll say is I’m extremely proud of the group and where we’ve come from since I’ve been here for the last four years.

“(From) 15th last year to first (this year), albeit we didn’t win any finals, I’d definitely rather be in this position than not, because we haven’t played finals the last few years.

“We’ll keep putting ourselves out there and we’ll learn from it and try and get better. Well, we have to get better.

“And yeah, it’s going to hurt for a while, but hopefully we can learn from it.”

HAWKS INTO THE PRELIM

FT - Adelaide 10.7 (67) Hawthorn 14.17 (101)

Hawthorn have just been too good tonight.

They progress through to a preliminary final for the first time since 2015, and they’ve done it from eighth on the ladder.

The Hawks put Jack Gunston and Jack Ginnivan on ice for the last half of the last quarter too.

Gunston spent the last 15 minutes of the game on the bench and Ginnivan was similar.

“It’s just been a masterful coaching performance, the last four years, from Sam Mitchell,” Matthew Richardson said.

“Building the first couple of years, copping some heavy defeats, but teaching them the way to play.

“Since Round 5 last year, hasn’t it come to fruition.”

The Crows become the first minor premiers since North Melbourne in 1983 to go out of finals in straight sets.

The Hawks will now return to the MCG to play Geelong next Friday night, where they will play off for a spot in the big dance.

“Has this got a little waft of the Western Bulldogs from 2016?” James Brayshaw said of the Hawks’ run.

“They won all those finals on the road and just built across a finals series and, in the end, just couldn’t be denied.”

Alister Nicholson: “Sometimes there’ just a magic ingredient a team can capture, like the Bulldogs did that year.

“And there is something in this Hawthorn group that is infectious, flowing through the entire team and taking them to some special places.”

Another one from the Hawks and the fat lady can start singing now.

This thing is all over.

“Celebration time for the Hawks!” James Brayshaw said.

Matthew Richardson added: “Pretty complete performance from the Hawks.”

Rachele keeps the Crows alive

Q4 16:46 - Adelaide 8.7 (55) Hawthorn 12.14 (86)

Josh Rachele has soccered a nice goal off the ground and the Crows have a small pulse.

After the goal he kissed his black armband, which only he is wearing, and none of his teammates, it seems.

The goalsneak does have a soccer background and was in the Melbourne City Academy as a junior.

This could do it

Q4 18:48 - Adelaide 7.7 (49) Hawthorn 12.13 (85)

Are the Hawks home?

They’re going to be so hard to catch now, with Jack Gunston kicking his fifth for the night.

“It has been a match-winning night for Jack Gunston,” James Brayshaw said.

Hawks out to a 36-point lead and in complete control of the game.

Three-quarter time

HT - Adelaide 7.7 (49) Hawthorn 11.13 (79)

Adelaide are just hanging in after kicking one with a minute left on the clock.

It was Riley Thilythorpe who kicked his third for the night, and 60 for the season.

He’s just the fifth player to reach that mark for the Crows.

“It’s a pulse for the Adelaide footy club,” Dale Thomas said.

“They just needed something going into three-quarter time.”
