Ukrainian politician assassinated in Lviv street

Ukraine has vowed revenge after the shock assassination of former parliamentary speaker Andriy Parubiy, who was gunned down in broad daylight on a street in western Ukraine.

At 10.30am yesterday morning in Lviv, a man disguised as a food delivery driver walked up behind the pro-European politician and fired eight shots, executing him on the street.

President Volodymyr Zelensky called it a “horrendous murder”, saying “all necessary forces and means are engaged in the search for the killer”.

Authorities are investigating potential Russian involvement in the assassination of the fiercely anti-Russian former politician.

The killing comes as Moscow unleashed another wave of strikes on Ukraine, launching hundreds of drones and dozens of missiles across the country.

Zaporizhzhia in the southeast was hit hard, with more than 40 houses and 14 apartment buildings damaged. One person was killed and 29 injured, including three children.

“We see that Russia does not want peace,” Ukrainian officials said.

Europe’s foreign ministers are meeting in Copenhagen, discussing ways to force Vladimir Putin to the negotiating table. “We need to build up even bigger pressure on Putin,” they said.

Meanwhile, Yemen’s Houthi rebels have confirmed Prime Minister Ahmed al-Rahawi was killed in an Israeli airstrike last week. The Iran-backed group says he died along with several other ministers when the IDF targeted the capital, Sanaa.

The rebels are vowing revenge for the strike.
