When a resident, a 55-year-old man, approached the men, an altercation broke out inside the home, NSW Police said.
A smashed window and busted doorbell could be seen in footage of the home.
It’s understood the man was hit with the hammer and suffered minor injuries.
He was treated at the scene by NSW Ambulance paramedics and then taken to hospital.
The three men then fled the scene in a large SUV.
A crime scene was established, and police are urging anyone with information relevant to the investigation to contact Crime Stoppers.
The attack comes just over a month after a teenage boy was hospitalised during a similar home invasion in Werrington County, a small suburb on the eastern boundary of Werrington Downs.
In that attack, too, it was three men armed with machetes that forced their way into a home on Prince St about 1.30am on April 23.
The teen was slashed in the left hand at the time.
Police told www.20304050.best that local detectives have not linked the two incidents.
