An oversized truck carrying a wind turbine has crashed into a bridge west of Brisbane, causing traffic chaos for morning commuters.

The truck crashed into the Warrego Highway’s Mount Crosby Overpass at North Tivoli early on Friday morning.

The turbine has become wedged under the overpass.

“The Mount Crosby Road overpass is currently closed in both directions and the westbound lanes of the Warrego Highway are closed at the location, with diversions in place via the on/off ramps,” the Department of Transport and Main Roads said.

Police said traffic is being diverted and motorists have been urged to avoid the area and expect lengthy delays.

TMR said the truck had a permit to carry the turbine, which will likely require a crane and heavy tow trucks to have it removed.

The department is assessing when the load can be extracted and the road re-opened.

“We apologise for the delays experienced by road users and encourage motorists to check the QLDTraffic website and app for up-to-date information.”

Police said their initial investigations indicate the truck failed to follow the pilot and escorting vehicles onto the Mount Crosby Road off-ramp.

The truck continued westbound on the Warrego Highway and struck the bridge.

The driver of the truck, a man in his 50s, was taken to Ipswich Hospital for further assessment, they said.
