An internal investigation is underway after a man tasered by police died in hospital overnight.

The man appeared to suffer a medical episode minutes after being restrained at a property in the Perth suburb of Embleton, Assistant Commissioner Martin Haime said.

The man allegedly entered a stranger’s house on Priestley St about 12.30am on Friday and smashed multiple windows.

He was found in the rear garden of the home when WA Police officers arrived shortly after.

“Officers attempted to negotiate with the man who continued to behave in an aggressive manner and was not compliant with police instructions,” Haime said.

“A taser was deployed by an officer during attempts to detain the man.”

The man was “eventually restrained” but minutes later appeared to suffer a medical episode, Haime said.

Police provided first aid and St John WA was called before the man was taken to Royal Perth Hospital, where he died.

Because the man was in custody prior to his death, the internal investigation unit will look into the matter as a death in police custody.

“Our thoughts are with the man’s family and loved ones during this difficult time,” Haime said.

“Our thoughts are also with first responders, the attending officers who acted quickly to provide medical assistance to the man, as well as paramedics and medical staff.

“The investigation is in its infancy and I’m not able to provide further details at this time.”

A report will be prepared for the coroner.
