Police are investigating after a man died in a single-vehicle crash in the NSW Hunter Valley on Monday night.

Emergency services were called to Eurimbla St, Thornton — a suburb of Maitland — about 7.50pm following reports of an accident, where they found a car had crashed into a parked vehicle before crashing into a pole.

The driver and sole occupant of the car was a man aged in his 50s. He was taken to hospital in a critical condition but died a short time later.

He is yet to be formally identified.
