Family seeks answers as body found in Hobart bin identified as 45-year-old Luke Jon Telega

His name and photo have been released to help trace his final movements.

The body found in an industrial-sized bin in Tasmania has been identified as 45-year-old Luke Jon Telega.

Telega was discovered by a garbage contractor behind a hairdressing salon and a Salvation Army store on Percy St in Bellerive, greater Hobart, about 9am on Monday.

The worker told police he initially thought the body was a mannequin.

Following an autopsy conducted on Tuesday, police confirmed there were no visible signs of injury.

“Police continue to maintain an open mind and treat the death as a case of misadventure, or foul play, or a potential combination of both,” Detective Inspector David Gill said on Tuesday.

With the permission of Telega’s family, police released his name and photo, hoping to gather more information about his movements before his death.

Gill said Telega was last seen alive on Saturday night about 10pm, when he was visiting his family.

“But there remains a gap in the timeline until the discovery of his body by a garbage contractor on Monday morning,” he added.

The area behind the shops on Percy St is known to be frequented by people sleeping rough, Gill said.

It is unclear if the man was sleeping in the bin.

Tributes have poured in online, remembering Telega as a “beautiful-hearted man”.

His daughter, Harmony Telega, shared a photo of him and recalled, “Dad was always sleeping on the couch.”

One tribute read: “RIP Luke. I’ll treasure the memories we made, back in the day.”

“I’m so sorry that this is how your story ended. Such a beautiful hearted man, sadly with a troubled soul. I hope you’re at peace.”

Another friend commented: “Condolences to his family and friends, some good times spent with ya mate at Nick and Dale’s. You were a laugh and I’ll remember ya mate till I get up there. Save me a seat.”

“RIP Luke! We will miss your cheekiness and kind heart. Thank you for giving us so many fun memories,” another tribute said.

Anyone who may have seen Telega in Bellerive or the greater Hobart area — especially on Sunday — or has any information is urged to come forward.
