The teen tutor was driving to work when his car was struck as the racers reached speeds over 100km/h in a 60km/h zone.

Two drivers have been sentenced to a cumulative five-and-a-half years in jail after a spontaneous street race ended a young man’s life.

Chantelle Pope, 27, and Abdelkader Nadour, 49, reached speeds over 100km/h in the 60km/h zone on Coronation Pde at Enfield, in Sydney’s inner west, before the crash in April 2022.

The pair did not know each other when they pulled up in separate cars at a set of traffic lights and began to race.

As they approached a parked car blocking one of two lanes, neither driver fell back to allow a safe merge.

Nadour, in the left lane, pulled in front of Pope, causing a head-on crash with the 19-year-old driver travelling in the opposite direction, CCTV shows.

The teen tutor was driving to work when he was killed. He can not be named for legal reasons.

His parents told the court that the loss of their only son has destroyed their lives.

Nadour and Pope were both found guilty of manslaughter in April.

Nadour, who had his eight-year-old son in the car at the time of the crash, was sentenced to a minimum of three years in jail.

The judge found he showed no remorse for the crash, and has not taken responsibility for it

Pope received a lesser sentence of two years and six months in jail, because the judge accepted she felt remorse for her actions.
