Disgraced Kiama MP Gareth Ward to appeal after found guilty of sexually abusing two young men

The most serious charge against the MP carries a maximum penalty of 14 years in prison.

Convicted rapist and Kiama MP Gareth Ward will appeal his guilty verdict.

The 44-year-old disgraced MP announced the decision on Friday, a week after he was found guilty of sexually abusing two young men.

Ward in a statement said he was “absolutely shattered” by the outcome.

“(I) have taken the opportunity over the last few days to spend time with those I love following the verdict,” he said.

“I am taking advice about next steps, but I can confirm that I have provided instructions to my legal team to prepare an appeal at the earliest opportunity.

“I take this opportunity to thank so many from across our community that have sent warm and caring messages of support to me and my family.”

The long-time MP was convicted last Friday following an eight-week criminal trial at the Downing Centre District Court.

He was accused of inviting a drunk 18-year-old man to his South Coast home in February 2013 and indecently assaulting him three times in one night, despite his attempts to resist.

Two years later, the long-time MP sexually assaulted an intoxicated political staffer after a 2015 event at NSW Parliament House.

The man, aged 24 at the time, said Ward climbed into bed with him, groped his backside and sexually assaulted him despite him repeatedly saying “no”.

After the guilty verdict, NSW Premier Chris Minns said it would be “ridiculous” for Ward to remain in parliament following the conviction.

He called on Ward to immediately resign, adding that legal advice had confirmed he could be expelled from parliament if necessary.

The most serious charge against Ward carries a maximum penalty of 14 years in prison.
