Driver killed as ute rolls off highway

A woman has died in a single-vehicle crash in rural north Queensland on Tuesday.

The 35-year-old Koah woman crashed on the Mulligan Hwy at Lakeland, about two hours northeast of Port Douglas, about 6.30am.

Another driver saw the woman’s Toyota Hilux “roll off the road” and called Triple-0, Queensland Police said.

The 35-year-old woman was the only person in the ute at the time, and died on the roadside.

Fox kills native animals at Melbourne Zoo

A fox has killed three native marsupials at Melbourne Zoo.

The fox killed three potoroos several weeks ago, the zoo confirmed on Tuesday.

The fox had also stalked several other species on the zoo grounds, including wild, free-roaming native species such as brushtail possums.

“Expert contractors humanely dealt with the fox,” the zoo said.

The zoo said it has boosted monitoring and security measures for the animals, as well as more regular assessments by pest specialists.

It said these measures seem to be working with no further fox attacks since the potoroos were killed last month.

Driver dies after horror Sunshine Coast crash

A driver who was involved in a two-vehicle crash earlier this month has died.

The 42-year-old Pacific Paradise man crashed head-on with a young Victorian driver on the Sunshine Mwy at Marcoola about 7.20pm on August 5.

The Pacific Paradise man was critically injured and taken to hospital, where he died of his injuries on Saturday, police said on Tuesday.

The other driver involved was not injured, and investigations into the crash are ongoing.

Peak hour train delays for Melbourne commuters

An equipment fault is causing major train delays in Melbourne.

The Werribee, Williamstown, and Craigieburn lines are all affected, Metro Trains said.

Some trains on the Werribee and Williamstown lines will not run the full length of their line, and will start and finish at stations which are not the first or last stop on the line.

Travellers are urged to check for the intermediate stations in use, with services set to change at short notice.

For travellers on the Craigieburn line, City Loop services will instead run direct to North Melbourne, Southern Cross, and Flinders St — not via the City Loop.

“Passengers for Loop Stations, please change at North Melbourne and listen for announcements,” Metro Trains said.

Latest Trump and Zelensky talk goes better than the last

Hopes for a trilateral meeting with Russia emerged after a White House discussion between US President Donald Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky on Monday.

Zelensky was bolstered by the support of five European leaders who accompanied him to Washington to negotiate an end to Russia’s war in Ukraine.

Trump said it would be just a week or two before it became clear whether a peace deal would be reached, or whether “this horrible fighting” is set to continue.

He interrupted the talks to make a phone call to Russian President Vladimir Putin, before resuming his meeting with the European leaders, an EU diplomat told Reuters.

The meeting appeared to go more smootly than the last time Zelensky met Trump in the Oval Office, and was publicly berated by the US leader.

The leaders this time negotiated a US backing of Ukraine to prevent Russia ambushing Ukraine after a peace deal, should one be reached.

Trump offered a “NATO-like” security presence but stopped short of committing US troops to a collective effort supporting the nation under siege.

Burnt out car found after deadly Sydney shooting

A burnt out Mustang has been found after a deadly shooting in Sydney’s inner west.

The destroyed car was found on Primrose Ave at Rydalmere about 9.50pm on Monday.

It matches the rough description of a getaway car used by the unknown killer who shot a 39-year-old man dead outside a pub in Forest Lodge about 6.40pm on Sunday.

A second victim, a 31-year-old man, survived being shot numerous times in the attack and remains in hospital.

No confirmed links have yet been made between the Mustang and the shooting, which NSW Police believe was targeted.

“Any links to recent incidents will be examined as part of the investigation,” NSW Police said on Tuesday.

Organised crime networks are also currently under investigation.
