Cafe staff member threatened with gun and customers forced to flee as business set alight

A cafe has been destroyed in an alleged arson attack in Melbourne’s southeast.

Two unknown offenders entered Arabian Lounge and cafe on the Princes Hwy in Noble park about 11.40pm on Wednesday.

A staff member and two customers were inside at the time.

It’s understood the offenders had the staff member on his knees and pointed a gun to the back of his head while making demands for a CCTV hard drive.

The employee and the customers managed to escape before the offenders then used accelerant to start a fire inside the cafe.

The arsonists fled while the building sustained significant damage.

“An investigation into the incident is underway,” police said.

The cafe was targeted in a firebombing in March.

New owners took over the business only a few months ago.

Five soldiers shot at US army base

A sergeant shot five soldiers on Wednesday at one of America’s largest army bases before he was quickly tackled by other Fort Stewart troops, forcing a brief lockdown, officials said.

Few details were immediately available about what led to the gunfire, but officials said the shooter was Sergeant Quornelius Radford, 28, who used a personal handgun, not a military firearm.

Radford opened fire where he worked but officials wouldn’t speculate about a motive, authorities said.

The injured soldiers are stable and expected to recover.
