Trump arrives for historic second UK state visit

Princess Catherine and US First Lady Melania Trump looked right at home as they took part in their first-ever joint engagement.

The leading ladies met with young members of the Squirrel Scouts at Frogmore Cottage in Windsor on Thursday as part of US President Donald Trump’s historic second state visit.

The princess and First Lady were pictured playing a parachute game, painting leaves that the children had collected and building bug hotels, as the Squirrels worked towards achieving their ‘Go Wild’ badge.

Both dressed in earth-toned ensembles for the outing with the pair seen sharing hugs and laughs with the children — revealing a softer side to Melania she doesn’t often show.

The back-to-nature morning was an opportunity for Catherine to showcase the scouts’ work and help share her own belief in finding joy in the outdoors.

“The Princess of Wales is absolutely incredible with our young people,” Chief Scout Dwayne Fields told PEOPLE.

“I’ve seen her work with them before — she interacts very personably, she loves to exchange stories and she loves to talk to them.”

“The princess always mentions her young children,” he added, referring to Prince George, 12, Princess Charlotte, 10, and Prince Louis, seven.

“It’s clear that as a mum, that’s something really special to her.

“She recognises that sharing stories about her own young people with young people is a great way to build a connection.”

Speaking about the first lady, Fields revealed: “Melania was very similar. She was engaging, she asked lots of questions and the young people were willing to talk to her. And they even made some artwork together.”

He says the two women were also “amazingly warm” with each other.

The Prince and Princess of Wales were the first to welcome US President Donald Trump and his wife Melania when they landed in the UK on Wednesday for the historic second state visit.

Trump stepped out of his helicopter, raised his hand in a salute and then shook the prince’s hand.

Then, upon greeting the princess, Trump shook her hand and said: “You’re beautiful. So beautiful.”

Catherine didn’t appear to react one way or another.

She reached out to shake Melania’s hand and then the four of them walked across the lawn toward King Charles III and Queen Camilla.

The three-day visit also included a carriage ride, a tour of St George’s Chapel and the grand state banquet before the US leader flew home on Friday.

Why everybody’s talking about Princess Catherine’s tiara

Princess Catherine stole the spotlight during the highly-anticipated state banquet.

The Princess of Wales looked radiant in her flowing gold lace gown but all eyes were on her choice of diadem for the night — the Lover’s Knot tiara.

The Lover’s Knot is Catherine’s most frequently worn tiara but it was also the late Princess Diana’s favourite piece.

It was first created for Queen Mary in 1914 by the House of Garrard from pearls and diamonds already owned by her family — its bow details are what gives it its Lover’s Knot name.

When Queen Mary died in 1953, the tiara was left to her granddaughter Queen Elizabeth II.

The special piece of jewellery was given to Princess Diana as a wedding gift after her 1981 wedding to Prince Charles.

The tiara quickly became one of Diana’s most cherished pieces and she wore it on numerous royal engagements around the world.

After her divorce from Prince Charles in 1996, the tiara was returned to Queen Elizabeth II.

For the next two decades, it was believed to have been stored securely at Buckingham Palace.

Continuing Diana’s legacy, Princess Catherine brought the beloved tiara back into the spotlight. She first wore the Lover’s Knot Tiara at a Buckingham Palace reception in 2015.

Since then, the Princess of Wales has frequently chosen the tiara for state banquets and annual diplomatic receptions. Most recently, she wore it in July during the state banquet held in honour of the French state visit.
