Singer Guy Sebastian has shocked fans after revealing he underwent gruelling surgery not once but twice to make sure he could perform and play his guitar again.

Speaking to Sunrise on Friday, the Australian Idol winner told hosts Nat Barr and Matt Shirvington about his double spinal surgery — both of which he endured in a single week.

“It has been hell to be honest,” Sebastian said.

“Like it got to a point where I couldn’t take the pain.

“I had no feeling in my hand, I was dropping my guitar picks and I knew something needed to be done.

“So I had a surgery and then I was one of the rare cases of needing to have it again.

“I had two spinal surgeries within a week and it was hell.

“But I am on the mend now and I knew I had to get everything good because I am touring next year.

“It has been a rough few weeks, I can’t lie about that.”

Sebastian is due to headline Sunrise’s Grand Final Brekky Party in Melbourne on September 26.

Having grown up playing football, the former Voice coach revealed he would be singing songs from his new album 100 Times Around The Sun plus some fan favourites at the special event.

When asked about his recovery following the procedures, Sebastian assured the hosts he was on the mend and was looking forward to Friday’s big performance.

“The pain is gone and I am so grateful,” Sebastian confirmed.

“I am one of the lucky ones to be able to get surgery and so I am really grateful.

“All the doctors and everyone were amazing.”

On August 30, Sebastian shared a picture from his hospital bed with an emotional update about his health challenges this year.

“There’s been a lot of highs this year but it’s also been a year where I’ve had to manage a lot of physical pain,” Sebastian wrote on Instagram.

“The worst of it has been this nerve pain in my spine shooting down my right side.

“I wouldn’t wish this pain on anyone. It just never stops and it’s all consuming, while trying to work, travel, do gigs etc.

“I am however so grateful for the fact that I have been able to have spinal surgery yesterday.

“I hope it gives me relief and the strength comes back in my arm.

My goal is to get all of this sorted and bounce back hard for tour early next year.”

Sebastian spent six seasons as a coach on Seven Network’s hit reality TV series The Voice.

In October last year, the singer-songwriter announced he was stepping back from the role to concentrate on his own music.

“I have made the decision to take a break from the best red chair on the planet. It’s been six amazing years as a coach and it’s honestly been the best gig ever!” Sebastian shared on Instagram at the time.

“I have nothing but good things to say about the show itself, and sharing the panel with such amazing coaches has been a pleasure.

“It’s been a privilege to guide the next wave of Aussie talent alongside the wonderful teams and crew at @channel7 & @itvstudiosaus!

“The best thing about the show is how positive it is and how much care and passion goes into making it a safe place for artists.”

Sebastian will kick off his Australian tour in April 2026.
