Having worked with celebrity clients including Simone Holtznagel and Zoe Marshall on immersive environments that grow with your kids, Mary knows a thing or two about making something that appeals to both adults and children alike.
Recently, Mary — who runs Picasso’s Parlour — sat down with Best Picks to share her top 10 styling tips and tricks, as well as the purchases that make them.
1. Add interest with themed bedding and cosy layers
If you’re looking to inject an element of personality into your kids’ room, one of the best things you can do is opt for themed bedding and cosy layers.
“Choose fun, colourful bedding that matches the child’s interest, while incorporating soft blankets and pillows for comfort,” she tells Best Picks.
Some of Mary’s top picks in this regard include the Celeste Cushion Cover ($70) and Stevie Velvet Collection from Sheet Society.
She also highlights Hommey’s Quilt Covers (from $159), which are not only hard-working but look good too.

2. Always add functional storage solutions
There is nothing worse than a kids’ room with a lack of storage.
Whether it’s their endless tutus, soft toys or plastic food for their kitchen, every parent knows we need smart storage solutions that actually look good too.
And this is why Mary always recommends some.
“Use bins, shelves and under-bed storage to keep toys, books and clothes organised,” she explains.
“This allows space for imagination and play.”
With these, she is a big fan of cult locker business Mustard Made’s Lowdown ($419), as well as the Arched Bookshelf ($129) from Nuage Interiors.
The Malo Rotating Bookshelf ($499) by Nuage is also a great investment as it makes it feel like they are in a library at home.
3. Playful wall decor is a must
“Add wall decals, murals or framed art that reflect the child’s personality and can be easily updated as they grow,” Mary advises.
She loves the Sketchbook Flora Beige and Cream Wallpaper by Olive and Oriel, as well as Desenio’s Hot Air Balloon Print for a feeling of adventure in your kids’ room.

4. Multi-use furniture is always good
In a similar vein to adding storage solutions, multi-use furniture is a great shout.
Mary advises “investing in pieces like bunk beds with built-in desks, foldable study tables, or convertible cribs for versatility”.
Good options in this regard include Boori’s Neat Single Bunk Bed and the Temple and Webster rattan single bunk bed.
Freedom Furniture also have a fantastic bunk bed offering.

5. Always add a soft rug or play mat
A good child’s bedroom is nothing without a soft rug or play mat.
And when designing a child’s room, Mary will always make sure to include a soft, easy-to-clean rug or foam mat.
“I love the Robyn Peach Pink Scallop Washable Rug from Miss Amara,” she says.
Elsewhere, Mary is a fan of the Friends Beige Chenille Rug, Checks Light Blue New Jute Rug and Ethics Peach Chenille Rug from double.
6. Remember good lighting
“Include a mix of ambient lighting, a reading lamp and possibly string lights or a fun nightlight for a warm atmosphere,” Mary says.
She especially loves the stunning Ceramic Wall Oyster Sconce light by Robert Gordon Interiors, as well as this gorgeous assymetrical Paolo and Joy lamp.
The Evie Table Lamp in Blush would make a welcome addition to a little girl’s room.

7. Consider interactive elements
Kids love an element of interactive play, so anything like chalkboards, whiteboards or magnetic boards will always resonate well with them.
Mustard Made’s new Storyboard is fantastic in this regard, as is the Archie Blackboard from Hip Kids.
8. Create a reading nook
There’s nothing better in a bedroom than a cosy reading nook for curling up in.
“A small corner with a comfy chair, beanbag, or floor cushions along with a bookshelf encourages reading time,” Mary advises.
Therefore, it should never be forgotten about.
This Striped Toddler Lounger from Phile makes an attractive addition to a kids’ space, as does the Hennie Kids Chair from Sacred Bundle.

9. Bring in personalised touches
Mary’s penultimate tip is to personalise things and make things bespoke to your child.
“Name signs, custom prints or DIY crafts make the space feel unique and special to the child,” she says.
Many brands do this but standouts include Hillside Decorator and Arlo & Co’s name plaques.
10. Remember growth-friendly design
Last but not least, she said it’s supremely important to choose adaptable furniture and neutral base colours.
Then, add pops of easily changeable accessories to grow with the child’s evolving taste.
