Former Porto captain Jorge Costa has died at the age of 53 after suffering a cardiac arrest at the club’s training centre, the Portuguese side said.
The former defender, who was serving as Porto’s Director of Professional Football in his second season in the role, was rushed to hospital but could not be saved.
Costa famously Porto to UEFA Cup glory in 2003 and the Champions League title the following year under iconic manager Jose Mourinho.

“Throughout his life, both on and off the pitch, Jorge Costa embodied the values that define FC Porto: dedication, leadership, passion and an unshakeable spirit of conquest,” Porto said in a statement on Tuesday.
“He left his mark on generations of fans and became a symbol of Portismo.”
Mourinho, now in charge of Fenerbahce, learned the news shortly before a pre-match press conference for a Champions League qualifier.
“If he could speak with me now he would say ‘do your press conference, tomorrow play the game mister and win the game — forget about me’,” Mourinho said.
“I’m going to try and do my job today and tomorrow, and then I’ll cry after.”
Costa played 530 games in all competitions including 383 for Porto and 50 for Portugal’s national team.
“Today, Portuguese football and FC Porto lose one of its greatest symbols,” Portuguese great Deco wrote.
“Jorge Costa was the embodiment of Porto’s spirit and determination. A legendary captain who inspired us all.
“It was an honour to share so many titles and joys with you. Your name will forever be remembered. My condolences to the entire family. See you always, ‘Bicho’.”
Cristiano Ronaldo said farewell on Instagram: “Ate sempre Jorge Costa.”
Costa spent the 2001-02 season on loan at English Premier League club Charlton.
