Police boss sheds more light on why Rabbitohs star Brandon Smith was stopped at airport

The NRL star was stopped and questioned by police at the airport.

Queensland police commissioner Shane Chelepy has revealed why NRL star Brandon Smith was questioned by police at the airport last week.

Smith was interviewed by police when he arrived at Gold Coast airport last Saturday ahead of the Rabbitohs’ clash against the Titans on Sunday.

The 29-year-old was released without charge, but there were little details as to why he was stopped.

There is no suggestion Smith had done anything wrong, and News Corp reported he was questioned in relation to a person known to him.

Chelepy, who confirmed Smith had done nothing wrong, said the NRL star was very “co-operative” in the brief chat.

“It’s out in the media now that we have spoken to Brandon,” Chelepy told 4BC radio on Thursday morning.

“We spoke to Brandon at Coolangatta, when he arrived.

“We chatted to him about a number of things and then he was able to go on and play football.

“We have an ongoing police matter that we are dealing with.

“Brandon was very co-operative with us and he was able to go on and play a good game of football from what I saw.”

After speaking with police, Smith was allowed to join teammates at the hotel and free to play in Sunday’s clash against the Titans.

The matter was referred to the NRL integrity unit, but there was nothing to suggest the league needed to act.

Queensland Police issued a statement confirming they had spoken with Smith on the day he had been stopped

“Queensland Police had cause to speak to a 29-year-old male at Coolangatta Airport. The male was later released without charge. Police have no further information to provide.”

Smith joined the Rabbitohs mid-season after securing a release from the Sydney Roosters.

He has only managed two games for Souths due to injury, but featured in the win over the Titans on Sunday after making an impact off the bench.
