Brisbane prepare to be without Ezra Mam and Selwyn Cobbo for the rest of the season

‘I think it’s a complete long shot.’

Brisbane are now preparing to head into the finals without their superstar five-eighth Ezra Mam.

Broncos coach Michael Maguire has revealed that Mam is unlikely to be seen again this year as he attempts to recover from a “significant” hamstring issue that he suffered during the Broncos Round 23 clash against the Storm.

The news isn’t good for Selwyn Cobbo, either, who also has a hamstring injury.

“I can’t see Ez or Sel getting back (this year),” Maguire said on Thursday.

“They are working extremely hard to make sure they’re going to give themselves an opportunity, so we’ll wait and see what happens there, but their injuries are quite significant.

“At the end of the day I want to give them hope — but I think it’s a complete long shot for those two guys.”

The absence of the two stars is a serious blow to the Broncos’ chances of winning a flag this year and ending a 19-year premiership drought.

The Broncos will take on the Knights on Sunday and once again Ben Hunt and Billy Walters will fill void in the halves.

It was originally thought that Mam might be able to play a role in the finals if the Broncos go deep enough, but that now seems highly unlikely.

Mam — who had been banned for nine matches after he crashed his car while under the influence of a “cocktail” of drugs — helped change the fortunes of Brisbane when he returned to the team in Round 11.

Once he was injected back into the team, the Broncos went on a five-game winning streak.

There was some better news on the injury front with captain Adam Reynolds who is a chance of returning for the Broncos blockbuster Round 27 clash with the Storm on September 4.

“Reyno might be two weeks I’ve been told,” Maguire said.

“When that time comes, we’ll work what (Brisbane’s scrumbase) looks like, but at the moment we’ve got Billy and Hunty doing a great job from last week.

“We need to build on that because that’s what we have at this present moment.”
