Basketball ring collapses on Adelaide 36ers player

The NBL is investigating a training mishap that resulted in Adelaide 36ers star Ben Griscti being hospitalised after a backboard collapsed.

Griscti and his team were training at Canberra’s AIS Arena ahead of Saturday night’s clash against Tasmania in the league’s pre-season tournament when the freak accident occurred.

The 23-year-old was reportedly collecting the ball under the ring following a teammate’s dunk when the backboard fell onto him.

Griscti laid on the court for over two hours until an ambulance arrived.

He was then taken to hospital and remains in a stable condition.

“The National Basketball League (NBL) is aware of a training incident involving Adelaide 36ers’ player, Benjamin Griscti,” the league said in a statement.

“The circumstances surrounding the incident will be investigated.

“The NBL advises that currently, Blitz (pre-season) games scheduled for 30th August will continue.”

Despite the serious incident, Saturday night’s pre-season games will continue as planned.

Griscti, a 23-year-old South Australian product, made his NBL debut in 2024-25.

The NBL’s pre-season competition wraps up in Canberra on Sunday, with the season proper to begin on September 18.
