Under-the-radar winger Jacob Wehr quits GWS as Leek Aleer’s big move to St Kilda confirmed

One decision has come back to haunt the club, with the 27-year-old walking to an interstate rival.
Jacob Wehr has opted to head home to South Australia.

The GWS Giants have confirmed Leek Aleer will depart the club after receiving a big-money offer to join St Kilda.

But the defender is not the only player on his way out, with under-the-radar winger Jacob Wehr also capitalising on his free agent status to return home to South Australia.

GWS’s season came to an end on Saturday with defeat at home to Hawthorn in the first week of the finals.

And the list turnover is already underway, with Aleer’s expected exit made official on Monday.

The Saints will need to agree to a trade to get their man.

Wehr, though, will walk to Port Adelaide as a result of last year’s list move.

The 27-year-old was delisted by the Giants despite being under contract for 2025, meaning he is now considered a delisted free agent after his deal expired.

He played 15 games this year before being dropped for the finals.

Wehr won a SANFL premiership with Woodville-West Torrens before being picked up as a mature-age recruit in the 2020 AFL draft.

He will join a Port Adelaide side in flux following the coaching handover from Ken Hinkley to Josh Carr, with football boss Chris Davies also leaving the club.

Wehr is the first addition to fill the void left by a significant number of list changes.

Travis Boak and Willie Rioli has retired while Jed McEntee, Ryan Burton, Jeremy Finlayon, Dylan Williams, Lachie Charleson and Hugh Jackson were delisted.

Meanwhile, Aleer will join St Kilda alongside Carlton duo Tom De Koning and Jack Silvagni as well as West Coast’s Liam Ryan.

The Saints have already acknowledged the decisions by De Koning and Silvagni, issuing low-key statements to declare they are “very pleased” to lock in the big-money signings.

But their splash could come at a cost.

7NEWS Melbourne’s Mitch Cleary has revealed ruckman Rowan Marshall has already met with Geelong coach Chris Scott about a potential trade.

Marshall has two years left on his contract with St Kilda but appears concerned about his role alongside De Koning.

Elsewhere at the Giants, Wade Derksen is set to reboot trade talks after being held to his contract last year.

Melbourne are in line to recruit the untried swingman, as reported by 7NEWS Melbourne’s Xander McGuire in July.
