Kane Cornes slams Geelong fans for treatment of Gryan Miers: ‘Pull your head in’

‘This is the most spoilt group of supporters in the competition.’

Channel 7 commentator Kane Cornes has slammed Geelong fans for their treatment of Gryan Miers during last week’s loss to Brisbane.

Miers has quickly become one of the AFL’s most dangerous forwards, with his crafty kicking setting up countless goals and scoring opportunities for the Cats.

The 26-year-old broke Jason Akermanis’ 20-year-old record for goal assists in a home and away season when he finished with 41 for the year in 2023.

He has continued to be a key player for the Cats and has been among his side’s best and most consistent this year.

But against the Lions, he had a rare off night, committing five turnovers from just 15 possessions — his lowest output from a full game since Round 1.

After two early mistakes, Cats fans could be heard giving Miers the Bronx cheer when he did hit a target in the second quarter.

Cornes couldn’t believe it.

“I did notice a couple of skill errors from Gryan Miers early. So he wasn’t at his absolute best, but this player has probably hit more targets than any player in the last five years,” he said on The Agenda Setters.

“We all agree he’s an excellent kick, he’s a terrific decision maker, he’s a good kick inside forward 50.

“Yep, a couple of these went directly to the opposition. Not ideal at all, and that one cost a goal and not a great start for Gryan and the Geelong Footy Club.

“But I could not believe it when I heard this from the Geelong crowd.

“Imagine giving that player the Bronx cheer early in the game because he hit a target.

“This is a spoilt group of supporters, the most spoilt group of supporters in the competition, who win 70 per cent of their games. Chris Scott’s 15th season, he’s got a win-loss of 70 per cent.

“They do not know how good they’ve got it. Every year they’re in contention. Every year they’re in contention to win a premiership.

“They win premierships, and they’ve got one of their best ball users who makes two skill errors early, and then when he hits a target, they give him the Bronx cheer.

“How they think that he’s helping one of their players get the best out of themselves is ridiculous.

“Pull your head in, get back to supporting your players, and realise how spoilt you have been.

“Nothing worse than a crowd giving their own player a Bronx cheer, how they think that helps their confidence ... completely ridiculous.”

Geelong fans were wearing club-provided white t-shirts in a bid to create a hostile atmosphere for the visiting Lions.

But despite it visually looking good, the stunt fell flat with the Cats producing their worst performance of the season.
