Donald Trump likens US strikes on Iran to atomic bombing of Hiroshima

‘That ended that war, this ended this war.’

Donald Trump has compared US stealth strikes on Iran’s nuclear facilities to the World War II bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki.

Trump said the US’ bunker busters had set Iran’s nuclear program back decades and effectively ended the conflict between Iran and Israel, likening the result to atomic strikes on Japan in 1945.

“That hit ended the war. I don’t want to use an example of Hiroshima, I don’t want to use an example of Nagasaki, but that was essentially the same thing,” he said at a NATO summit in The Hague in The Netherlands on Wednesday.

“That ended that war, this ended (this) war.

“If we didn’t take (the nuclear facilities) out, (Iran and Israel) would be fighting right now.”

Trump said the weekend strikes on Fordow, Natanz and Isfahan had caused “total obliteration” and batted away leaked reports suggesting they may have only set Iran’s nuclear program back by a few months.

“I don’t think they will ever do it again,” he said of Iran’s nuclear ambitions.

“I think they’re going to take their oil, they’re going to have some missiles, they’ll have some defence, I think they’ve had it, they just went through hell.

“We’re actually getting along with them very well right now.”

One report said Iran’s enriched uranium stocks had not been eliminated, and the country’s nuclear program, much of which is buried deep underground, might have only suffered a minor setback.

According to the report, which was produced by the Defense Intelligence Agency, the strikes sealed off the entrances to two of the facilities but did not collapse underground buildings.

The White House described the assessment as “flat-out wrong”, adding it was leaked to “demean President Trump and discredit the brave fighter pilots”.

Trump said he is waiting for damage assessment reports from Israel that would support his claims about the success of the strikes.

“I believe it was total obliteration, I believe they didn’t have a chance to get anything out,” he said.

Iran says its enrichment activities are for civilian purposes only.

Commercial satellite imagery indicates the US attack on Iran’s Fordow nuclear plant severely damaged — and possibly destroyed — the deeply buried site and the uranium-enriching centrifuges it housed.

It comes as a fragile ceasefire between Iran and Israel, brokered by the US, appeared to be holding, with Trump’s Middle East envoy hopeful of a long-term peace deal.

“We are hopeful that we can have a long-term peace agreement that resurrects Iran,” Steve Witkoff said.

“Now it’s for us to sit down with the Iranians and get to a comprehensive peace agreement, and I am very confident that we are going to achieve that.”

Both Israel and Iran claimed victory on Tuesday.

The Australian Strategic Policy Institute’s David Wroe said Iran “has comprehensively lost over the past two weeks”.

“Their leadership has been degraded, their defences have been degraded,” he told 7NEWS.

“I think Trump has actually shown that he does have the guts to use force where it’s necessary so that’s an important signal to Tehran as well.

“In this weakened position I do think that there’s an opportunity for the US and Israel to work together to force Iran to end its nuclear program fully.”
