An SUV is believed to have veered onto the wrong side of the road.

Two people have died, and another hospitalised, in a horrific head-on crash in Melbourne.

Emergency services were called out to a multi-car crash on Fitzsimons Ln in Templestowe about 9.25am on Monday.

A silver SUV is said to have veered onto the wrong side of the road and collided head-on with a hatchback, police said.

Both people inside the hatchback suffered life-threatening injuries and were declared dead at the scene.

They have yet to be formally identified.

The driver of the silver SUV, a 54-year-old Balwyn North woman, was taken to hospital with minor injuries under police guard.

A third car, a grey SUV, was also hit in the crash, however, no one from the third car was injured.

“The exact circumstances surrounding the collision are yet to be determined and investigations remain ongoing,” police said.

“Anyone who witnessed the incident, has dashcam footage or any other information that could assist police is urged to contact Crime Stoppers.”
