Winter is sinking its teeth in across Australia as fierce downpours and intense winds prompt concerns over blizzard conditions.
The cold bite comes as a huge low pressure system stretches over much of central Queensland, down to Tasmania, and curls back up to coastal areas of South Australia.
Most of the nation’s southeast has been issued severe weather warnings, as strong marine winds whip each of the states.

In alpine areas, dangerous blizzard conditions have also prompted their own warnings.
Queensland
The monster low pressure system has brought 10mm to 40mm of rain across Queensland’s southern interior.
The wet weather is expected to push into the state’s southeast on Saturday afternoon.
A strong wind warning has also been issued for the Gold Coast.
Rain in the state’s south on Saturday is expected to ease on Sunday.
New South Wales
Sydney and much of NSW coastline will escape the chilly weekend weather with only mild temperatures and a few showers.
But alpine regions above 1900m will experience blizzard conditions into Saturday afternoon.
For alpine areas above 1200m, and adjacent slopes, damaging northwesterly winds with gusts of up to 100km/h expected to develop, before they are set to ease later in the afternoon.
The dangerous winds are likely to affect resort slopes Perisher and Thredbo, and the Snowy Mountains.
“The NSW National Parks and Wildlife Service recommends that back-country travel be postponed until conditions improve,” Bureau of Meteorology said.

Victoria
Victoria’s high country is also warned it could be blasted with blizzard conditions.
Falls Creek, Mt Baw Baw, Mt Hotham and Mt Buller, Dargo, Omeo, and places above 1400m high could all be lashed by a “vigorous northerly flow,” BoM said.
Gusts up to 100km/h have already been measured on the ski resort slopes.
The Victoria State Emergency Service has warned people in affected areas to avoid travel, and stay indoors.
Damaging winds are expected to ease in the afternoon on Saturday.
Further south, the state’s coastal areas will also get away with showers.
South Australia
South Australia has been significantly drenched in recent days, with weekly rainfall totals reaching up to 130mm in some areas.
A severe weather alert was also in place for the Flinders and North East Pastoral districts, but that was cancelled as winds eased on Saturday.
The most intense rain and thunderstorms will hit on Saturday, before mostly clearing by Sunday.
“We’ll still see the leftover remnants of this system clearing the East Coast, but generally, it should be a fine, partly cloudy day,” BoM Senior Meteorologist Dean Narramore said.

Tasmania
A cold front is being pushed down the east coast of Tasmania by a deep low pressure system above the state’s northwest, prompting a severe weather warning along the coastline.
East to northeasterly winds are also strengthening ahead of it.
“The front will clear the southeast coast by early evening, with winds easing in its wake,” BoM said.
The Tasmanian State Emergency Service warned parents to supervise children in the weather, and a road weather alert is also in place.
“Reduced visibility in heavy rain, with possible water over roads will make road conditions dangerous,” BoM said.
A flood watch is also in place for the north and southeast of the state.
