Jane Bunn weather forecast: Warmer weekend on the way to beat the mid-winter blues in Melbourne, Sydney and Hobart

It may be the middle of winter, but it isn’t all doom and gloom.

On the weather front, we’re moving into a pattern that brings warmer than average weather.

Don’t get too excited, it won’t suddenly become summer-like — but at least it may not feel like the very depths of winter.

High pressure is moving to southeastern Australia, and eventually out over the Tasman Sea (between Australia and New Zealand).

It’s in a large ridge that stretches well into Western Australia.

What this does is make much of southern Australia’s winds northerly, and by blowing from the north they bring air from a warmer place.

No more Antarctic air… soon it will be coming from near Darwin.

This change in airmass means our temperature rise a few degrees.

On the weekend Perth should reach 19C. That’s two degrees above average.

Adelaide’s likely to reach 15C, one above average.

Melbourne’s heading for 14C and 15C, which is up to two degrees higher than usual.

Hobart and Sydney are some of the warmest in comparison to usual. Hobart’s 15C and Sydney’s 19C are both three degrees higher than average.

Even Darwin’s 32C is one degree above.

It’s not all warmer than average, the pattern can’t bring warm winds for all parts of the country — and Brisbane is the one missing out.

This week’s warmer than average stretch comes to an end later this week with some rain.

And the weekend looks colder than average.

In Canberra it should be one to two degrees above average during the day — but that’s after the night’s drop to around -5C!

That’s a huge five degrees colder than average, but at least a sunny day follows.

As we go into next week we’ll see an interesting sight on the satellite map — a northwest cloudband.

These are a huge band of cloud that stretch from the waters off Broome in the northwest through to southern and eastern Australia.

They act like a fast moving atmospheric river bringing moist air across the country — and when that meets up with low pressure we get widespread rain.

This is shaping up to be a special one for our farmers that really need the rain.
