By the time emergency services arrived, the car was already fully engulfed in flames.

Three people have died when a car went up in flames in shocking crash west of Bundaberg.

A red Ford Laser and a grey Mitsubishi Lancer driving in opposite directions crashed head-on on the Burnett Hwy at Grosvenor about 5.05pm on Monday.

The Mitsubishi Lancer was engulfed in flames when paramedics arrived and both people inside could not be saved.

The Ford driver, a 42-year-old woman from Cracow, was treated for life-threatening injuries but also died before she could be taken to hospital.

Police said investigations into the cause of the crash are ongoing.

Anyone with information or dashcam footage is urged to contact police.

Earlier on Monday, two people were killed in a crash in the Sunshine Coast hinterland.

A third person, a 61-year-old man, was airlifted to Sunshine Coast University Hospital with serious injuries.

He was later arrested and a homicide investigation launched.
