A teenage girl, shot in the stomach by police after allegedly making threats with a knife, has been charged.

The 17-year-old girl was at the West End Hotel on Ingham Rd, Townsville, in North Queensland, when the incident occurred on June 10.

“It will be alleged the girl came at police and was subsequently shot in the abdomen,” Queensland Police said.

Witnesses told 7NEWS they heard “one big bang”, thinking it was a car backfiring, before police arrived in numbers “straight away”.

Police provided first aid to the girl before she was taken to Townsville University Hospital, where it is understood she had surgery.

On Monday, police announced the girl had been arrested and charged with two counts of serious assault of a police officer whilst armed with a weapon and one count of acts intended to cause grievous bodily harm.

The teenager was remanded in custody and is due to reappear in the Townsville Magistrates Court on Tuesday.

“The Ethical Standards Command is continuing to investigate the incident, with the investigation subject to oversight by the Crime and Corruption Commission,” Police said.
