A teenage boy has been bitten by a shark off Cabarita Beach on the NSW far north coast.

Emergency services were called to the beach, in the Tweed Shire town of Bogangar, about 3.45pm on Sunday to find the 16-year-old with injuries to his hand, arm, and right leg.

Nearby surfers rushed to help, applying a tourniquet before carrying him to the beach car park.

Paramedics treated him at the scene before he was airlifted to Gold Coast University Hospital in a stable condition.

It’s understood the shark may have initially been targeting a seal before turning on the boy.
