Students sent home as gas leak forces evacuation at Airds High School in Campbelltown

Students were sent home after lunch and were not expected to return.

A high school has been evacuated following a suspected gas leak.

Airds High School in Campbelltown — in Western Sydney — was evacuated about 1.30pm on Monday after a ruptured gas main was detected, Fire and Rescue NSW (FRNSW) Superintendent Adam Dewberry said.

“There was just an odour of gas coming through the school,” Dewberry said.

“As a precaution, the school was evacuated.”

He said crews had monitored gas levels and identified the source — a ruptured gas main, likely caused by nearby roadworks.

All students are safe and were sent home.

In a statement on social media, the school confirmed all students and staff were safe.

“The current evacuation is precautionary,” the school said.

“Emergency services have arrived on site to ensure safety due to the works around our school.

“We will not be able to monitor our phones at this time.

“Thank you for your ongoing support.”

Contractors remain on site and have begun repairs, which are expected to take a couple of hours.

Riverside Dr has been closed, and parents are being asked to collect students via Briar Rd.
