Snow blankets Northern Tablelands as NSW braces for widespread storms and strong winds

A meteorologist has revealed when the wild weather will ease.

Heavy snowfall has blanketed parts of NSW as freezing weather sweeps across the state.

On Saturday, parts of the Northern Tablelands were transformed into a wintry white landscape following an “unusual” widespread snowfall.

Towns including Guyra, Armidale, Inverell, and Walcha recorded between 20cm and 40cm of snow, while snow flurries were even spotted as far north as southeast Queensland.

The widespread snowfall across the Northern Tablelands is “a little unusual”, but not unprecedented, said Miriam Bradbury, senior meteorologist at the Australian Bureau of Meteorology.

Meanwhile, eastern NSW experienced scattered showers, storms, and heavy rain, with 80mm to 100mm falling in parts of the Hunter and Mid-North Coast.

“Some of the top totals we’ve had in the 21 hours to 6am on Sunday morning include 137mm at Bulladilla, 133mm at Carey’s Peak, 112mm at Crawford, 100mm at Bowraville, and 99mm at Cessnock,” Bradbury said.

Alongside the rain and snow, strong winds swept across the east coast, with damaging gusts recorded at several locations.

Wind gusts reached up to 104km/h at Nobby’s Head, 96km/h at Kempsey Airport, 93km/h at Cabramurra in the state’s southeast, and 80km/h at Sydney Airport.

Bradbury warned that severe weather warnings remain in place across parts of NSW, including damaging wind gusts expected over the central and northern Tablelands, northeast coast, and Mid-North Coast districts.

These winds may persist in northeastern NSW until late Sunday night and extend into southeast Queensland.

Widespread flood warnings cover coastal and inland areas from Coffs Harbour to Newcastle, extending across the Northern Tablelands and northern slopes.

Parts of Sydney and northern NSW are expected to see widespread rain and showers, with the heaviest rainfall likely across the Hunter region.

As Sunday progresses, rain will ease to patchy showers, especially by the afternoon and evening.

Winds are also expected to ease throughout the day, particularly overnight into Monday.

The snow level has risen across northeastern NSW, so no further snow is forecast.

However, lingering snow from Saturday means road conditions, especially in the northeast, remain hazardous as the snow slowly melts.
