A man and woman aged, both aged 36, and a three-year-old child were home at the time.

Police said the man heard noises outside about 3am and went to check it out, when he was confronted by two suspects.

There was some kind of confrontation, or at least a discussion, before shots were fired, Detective Superintendent Naomi Moore said.

The man had to duck for cover and ran to the back of the house.

No one was injured.

The two gunmen then got into a white hatchback, where two other suspects were waiting, and the group fled the scene in that car.

The sound of gunfire was caught on CCTV and jolted nearby residents awake.

“Last night, I was sleeping — bang, bang — and I woke up. (I thought), sas that a dream, or was that actual gunshots?” one local told 7NEWS.

“It just sounded like fireworks, probably about five or six loud bangs,” another said.

The family had only moved into the Kellyville home a week ago.

While the motive is still under investigation, police believe the shooting was targeted.

“I won’t go so far as to say it’s gang-related, but we do believe that he was targeted,” Moore said.

Not long after the shooting, a sedan was found burning on Gorman Ave in Kellyville, about five minutes away.

Police said the car was used as a getaway vehicle.

Firefighters extinguished the blaze however the car was destroyed.

“The fire is being treated as suspicious and inquiries have commenced into the circumstances surrounding the incident,” NSW Police said.

The four suspects are still on the run.

Police are urging anyone with information, or anyone with dashcam/mobile phone footage from the area, to contact Castle Hill Police Station or Crime Stoppers.
