A shooting incident has prompted a homicide investigation in NSW on Monday.

The victim was found injured on Connorton Ave at Ashmont, a suburb in the southwest of Wagga Wagga, at about 3am.

The shooting is believed to have occurred outside as the result of an altercation, police said.

The victim was treated by NSW Ambulance paramedics but died at the scene.

He is yet to be formally identified, NSW Police said.

No arrests have been made at this stage.

Homicide detectives are assisting an ongoing investigation.

Connerton Ave runs along the northern side of Webb Park and Ashmont Skate Park.
