The murder trial of a man accused of stabbing his own friend to death over a debt owed on a motorbike has begun.

On Monday, the prosecution told the jury Goodfellow stabbed Torrans six times with a 12cm kitchen knife, the same one he was earlier using to slice mushrooms for dinner that night.

One of the strikes pierced Torrans’ heart, and another was inflicted with such force it cut through one of his ribs, the court was told.

Torrans stumbled onto the driveway and collapsed on the front lawn.

Emergency services were called but Torrans couldn’t be revived and died at the scene.

Goodfellow’s lawyer said Torrans was armed with knuckledusters and arrived at Goodfellow’s home “unannounced, unexpected and uninvited.”

“Mr Goodfellow didn’t want to kill him, he didn’t intend to kill him, he acted in the heat of the moment to defend himself,” Goodfellow’s lawyer said.

Goodfellow’s father will be called as a witness in the trial. He was inside the Salisbury Downs home watching television and heard an argument between the two men, the court was told.

Members of Torrans’ family were in court for day one of the trial.

The jury is expected to visit the crime scene in coming days.
