The SA Labor Party is facing a big reshuffle after the bombshell exit of two senior figures.

Deputy Premier Susan Close and Treasurer Stephen Mullighan will stand aside from cabinet, having informed Premier Peter Malinauskas they will retire from state parliament at the March election.

“This is a significant day in our state’s political history,” Malinauskas said.

“It has been my immense honour and privilege to have worked so closely with both Susan and Stephen over the past decade.

“Both have demonstrated formidable intellect, incredible leadership, competence and loyalty.”

Close was lauded for her work driving significant education, environment and social policy reform, and Mullighan for “delivering the nation’s best performing economy”.

‘I would love both to stay’

Malinauskas described the pair as “more than trusted colleagues”.

“They are my close confidants and friends,” he said.

“It goes without saying that I would love both to stay. But politics is not forever.”

Close has been deputy leader of the SA Labor Party for more than seven years, and Deputy Premier for over three.

She has been Minister for Climate, Environment and Water and Minister for Industry, Innovation and Science since March 2022, and served as Minister for Workforce and Population Strategy since April 2024.

Close, who was first elected to the seat of Port Adelaide in 2012, said she had “wrestled” with the decision to quit.

“I know that leaving politics at a time of my choice and still with enough energy to embrace the next challenge is a rare privilege,” she said.

“I had always planned to leave with fuel left in the tank, not to stagger to the finish line, but to still have something to offer.

“I realise that the time for that must be now.”

Mullighan has served as Treasure since 2022 and been Minister for Defence and Space Industries since early 2024.

He has also been Police Minister since January.

He entered state politics as the Member for Lee in 2014, becoming only the second Labor MP to immediately enter Cabinet after taking on the Transport and Infrastructure portfolio.

“I realise this will come as a surprise to many people but after working at senior levels of government over 22 years, it is time for change,” Mullighan said.

“I’m a strong believer in getting in, having a crack and getting as much done as possible, and the handing over the reins.”

Labor said the resignations allow the Premier a chance to “refresh the State Cabinet” to contest the March election.

More details on the reshuffle will be announced on Friday.
