A woman has shared her story of survival and revealed the challenges of learning to walk again, months after she suffered life-altering injuries when she was struck by a car while walking her dog.

Nicole Naughton, 59, was mowed down and allegedly left for dead in a hit-and-run in Rockingham, in Perth’s south, in May.

Almost every bone in her body was broken.

“I just couldn’t believe (it),” she told 7NEWS.

“I thought I was walking my dog which is something I did every day.”

It was an agonising 10 minutes before help arrived and she could be rushed to Royal Perth Hospital.

There she had multiple operations and spent 17 hours under the knife.

A cut on her head required 60 stitches to close.

“I had a broken nose, two broken shoulders and collarbones, 12 broken ribs ... punctured lung, lacerated liver, broken left arm, broken left leg in the femur, and then the broken right leg from my knee down,” Naughton said.

Husband Frank retired so he could “pull my super and pay for our house so we didn’t lose it”.

“Looking after my wife, that’s all I wanted do,” he said.

“I’m just so glad that she was able to survive. I prayed and prayed for it.”

Rehabilitation at Fiona Stanley Hospital is Naughton’s reality for now.

Just a few days ago, she was able to take her first steps aided by a walking brace.

It is a slow and grueling recovery that at times feels never-ending, and despite her progress, she still faces a long road ahead.

The alleged driver involved remains behind bars ahead of an appearance before a magistrate next week.
