The incident began on Sunday morning at a BP service station on the Bruce Highway in Morayfield, Queensland.
Police alleged a man and woman assaulted two women and attempted to steal their vehicles but were unsuccessful.
The investigators said that the pair then targeted a red Mitsubishi Outlander, assaulting the driver at gunpoint before stealing the car and fleeing north along the motorway.

During these offences, police said the suspects threatened drivers with a firearm.
Shortly after 11 am, officers were called to Glenview near Old Caloundra Rd on the Sunshine Coast following reports the stolen Outlander had crashed.
The man and woman were seen running away from the scene.
In response, police declared an emergency under the Public Safety Preservation Act (PSPA), locking down the area for several hours.
Officers recovered a homemade firearm near the crashed vehicle. Both the car and firearm have been seized for forensic analysis.
However, the suspects were not found.

The man is described as 35 years old, Caucasian, with short dark buzz-cut hair, brown eyes, and distinctive tattoos on the left side of his face, left arm, and hand.
The woman is believed to be 26, Caucasian, with blonde hair showing brown regrowth, dark eyes, and small tattoos near both eyes.
Police are urging the public not to approach the man or woman and to call Triple-0 immediately.
Anyone with information or dashcam footage from the area is encouraged to come forward.
