Police warn of ‘significant’ delays in determining Bundaberg teenager Pheobe Bishop’s cause of death

Investigators believe the Bundaberg teenager was allegedly murdered by her two housemates three weeks ago.

Police say it will take a “significant” amount of forensic examinations before investigators will be able to identify Pheobe Bishop’s cause of death.

Police confirmed on Friday afternoon that human remains had been found in the search for the missing 17-year-old, in a previously examined area of dense bushland near the Good Night Scrub National Park.

The area was re-examined after the arrest of James Wood, 34, and Tanika Bromley, 33 less than 24 hours earlier.

Police believe the Bundaberg teenager was allegedly murdered by her two housemates three weeks ago.

The remains are yet to be formally identified, however investigators are in contact with Bishop’s family.

Detective Inspector Craig Mansfield spoke to the media on Saturday morning and explained that the remains were found during an “extended search from the original location”.

“We always wanted to bring Pheobe home, and we believe this is the first step in that process,” he said.

“We hope this will bring some level of closure to Pheobe’s family.”

Mansfield said the remains were not buried, and that “significant forensic examinations will need to go ahead before a cause of death can be identified.”

Pheobe was last seen on May 15, when she was allegedly dropped off at Bundaberg Airport by her housemates.

She was planning to fly to Perth, in Western Australia, to spend time with her boyfriend, but failed to check in.

Police have still not found her luggage or her phone.

Wood and Bromley were arrested on Thursday night in the Bundaberg area and each charged with one count of murder and two counts of interfering with a corpse.

Police had previously taken Wood into custody in relation to the missing teen; however, they confirmed he was released without charge on Thursday morning.

Less than 24 hours later, Wood and Bromley were again taken into custody and charged with murder on Thursday night.

Mansfield said the remains were found in “unforgiving terrain,” and it may take some time for investigators to fully examine the crime scene.

“Police have been working really hard — they’ve been doing long hours, putting their heart and soul into the search... they should be proud of their achievements,” he said.

Pheobe’s mother, Kylie Johnson, said the discovery of the remains is “ripping her apart.”

“I didn’t think my heart could break any more than it did when you went missing, or when the charges were laid — but this! This is ripping me apart ...”

Johnson said a vigil had been organised to remember Pheobe, and it is set to take place on Sunday night at a park in Gin Gin.

“This vigil is a way for our family to acknowledge Pheobe’s impact on our community, their efforts, and the importance of a community that cares,” she said.

“While we don’t have Phee home to put to rest just yet, our community needs the healing process to start.”
