A young girl has died after being hit by a car in Tasmania.

The 12-year-old was crossing the East Derwent Highway at Bridgewater, in Hobart’s north, when she was struck by a car at about 6:15pm on May 20.

Paramedics rushed to the scene, and the girl was taken to the Royal Hobart Hospital in a critical condition.

Police confirmed on Saturday morning that the girl had died from her injuries, almost three weeks after the crash.

“Initial reports suggest the young girl, while crossing the road, ran into the path of a vehicle travelling east on the highway,” police said.

“An investigation into the crash is ongoing, and a report will be prepared for the Coroner.

“Our thoughts are with everyone affected by the crash.”
