An academic has been charged after he “inadvertently displayed” images of child abuse during a university lecture, police allege.

Melbourne detectives launched an investigation earlier this year after the matter was reported to police.

“Detectives will allege inappropriate images were inadvertently displayed during a university lecture in the CBD on February 5,” Victoria Police said.

Police did not say which university the alleged incident occurred at.

A 70-year-old man was interviewed before a number of electronic devices were seized when authorities raided his Middle Park address.

Detectives also travelled to Sydney where they searched a second property in the eastern suburbs on February 13.

“Further electronic devices were located and the investigation into those devices remains ongoing,” police said.

The Middle Park man was charged with one count of possess child abuse material (Commonwealth Offence) and two counts of possess child abuse material (Crimes Act).

He will appear at Melbourne Magistrates Court on Thursday.

Police say they are not searching for anyone else in relation to this matter.
