A man has died after being shot by police in Victoria.

Two officers attended an address on the Warburton Hwy at Yarra Junction, about an hour’s drive east of the Melbourne CBD, about 5.30pm on Wednesday after reports of a man assaulting a woman.

One officer discharged their firearm and despite the efforts of ambulance crews the man could not be revived.

The woman was airlifted to hospital with serious injuries and is believed to be known to the deceased man.

State coroner John Cain is also at the scene with homicide squad detectives investigating.
