The car crashed into power poles, a fence and a tram stop before it caught fire.

A driver has miraculously escaped from a wild crash that ended in a car bursting into flames.

It is understood the driver lost control of an east-bound Jeep while trying to turn into Kooyong Rd from Toorak Rd in Toorak in Melbourne’s southeast about 5.50pm on Sunday.

The car crashed into power poles, a fence and a tram stop near the corner of the two roads before it caught fire.

Footage of the aftermath shows bits of debris strewn across the road.

The Jeep had flipped onto its roof while a traffic light had been knocked to the ground.

People were seen surrounding a man who was lying on the road and being assisted by paramedics.

The driver was taken to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

Police say they do not believe the car was stolen.

“The investigation into the exact circumstances surrounding the incident is ongoing,” Victoria Police said.
