Donald Trump delivers ultimate humiliation to Peter Dutton as he addresses Anthony Albanese’s election win

The US president has finally commented on the federal election result.

US President Donald Trump has commented on the outcome of the Australian federal election for the first time since Labor’s avalanche win.

Relationships between Trump and Prime Minister Anthony Albanese haven’t always been on a good foot, with Albanese previously condemning Trump’s “Liberation Day” tariffs, saying they weren’t “the act of a friend”.

However, when asked during an interview on Monday, Trump said he and Albanese were friends.

“Albanese, I’m very friendly with,” the president said.

“I don’t know anything about the election.”

He went on to say that he thought Albanese was “very good”, and that he had “no idea” who Opposition Leader Peter Dutton was.

“I can only say he’s been very, very nice to me, very special to me,” he said.

“I have no idea who the other person was who ran against him, but we’ve had a very good relationship.”

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio congratulated Albanese on Sunday, saying Australia and the US are “close partners”.

“Congratulations to Prime Minister Anthony Albanese on his victory in Australia’s federal election,” Rubio said.

“Australia is a valued US friend and a close partner. We look forward to continuing to promote freedom and security in the Indo-Pacific and around the world.”

Trump’s comment about not knowing Dutton isn’t the first faux pas from a sitting US president.

In 2021, Joe Biden made headlines for forgetting former prime minister Scott Morrison’s name during an AUKUS security meeting, instead referring to him as “that fella from Down Under”.
